After several years pursuing her options at St Martins, Luella Bartley finally settled on the path of journalism. Leaving college for a job in the fashion dept at The Evening Standard, she steadily worked her way up through the ranks until a job at British Vogue called. There she happily stayed for a year and a half before her true calling took hold and she left to set up her own label. Close friend, Katie Grand reminisces, "I sort of remember being out one night getting a bit drunk and Luella suddenly deciding she was going to start a fashion label."Seeing the possibility of building these small successful collections into a fully rounded brand, it was not long before large Italian manufacturers and worldwide sales agents knocked at Luella's door. Agreements were signed and within months Gisele Bundchen was opening the AW02 show at NY Fashion Week. The season was heralded by all and clothing sales peaked, but it was the Luella for Mulberry bags the models were carrying that proved to be the turning point in Luella's business. The designs were Mulberry's best selling styles in years and Club 21, who had recently bought a majority stake in Mulberry, asked to meet the Luella team. Excited and inspired Club 21 agreed to develop a small experimental Luella accessories line.
